Grand Canyon at Southern Rim

We held one of the best sightseeing trips towards the end - the Grand Canyon at the Southern Rim. We really did not know what to expect and our visit was simply fantastic. We spent a full day at the Canyon and have no doubt it could have been longer.

a little spooky for us.

Meteor Crater

The Meteor Crater is the result of  a brilliant meteor hurtling toward Earth about 26,000 mph. Oh, it happened some 50,000 years ago. It was believed to have been a huge iron-nickel meteorite and was about 150 feet across  and weighed in at several hundred thousand tons. This meteor in seconds created a crater 700 feet deep and 4000 feet across.

The San Franciscan Peaks loom off in the distance from the
the Meteor Crater. We saw the Peaks from
many locations that we now realized the Sinaguan people
also saw and viewed them as spiritual.

Take it Easy! in Winslow Arizona

Well, I'm running down the road
tryin' to loosen my load
I've got seven women on my mind,
Four that wanna own me,
Two that wanna stone me,
One says she's a friend of mine,
Take it easy, take it easy
Don't let the sound of your own wheels
Drive you crazy
Lighten up while you still can
Don't even try to understand
Just find a place to make your stand
and take it easy

Well, I'm a standing on a corner
in Winslow Arizona
It's such a fine sight to see
It's a girl, my Lord, in a flatbed
Ford slowin' down to take a look at me
Come on, baby, don't say maybe
I gotta know if your sweet love is
gonna save me
We may lose and we may win though
we will never be here again
so open up, I'm climbin' in,
so take it easy..."Alright"

Lyrics by Jackson Browne and Glen Frey

According to Glenn Frey, the message of this song is, "You shouldn't get too big too fast."

Jackson Browne gave the song to Glen Frey without an ending. Glen Frey with his new band
the Eagles completed the lyrics and Take it Easy became the first song on the Eagles first Album
in 1972. The group actually sang the song in many shows before they ever recorded it. Awesome!

Walnut Canyon National Monument

Walnut Canyon is located east of Flagstaff and we once again learn more about the Sinaguan people. Their homes like other locations nearby, were built in cliffsides generally facing south and east to enjoy or have warmth and sunlight. There are a few dwelling that face north and west which may have been occupied in the warmer months. Remember too, this was over 800 years ago around 1100. Our visit descends down into the mid-section of the canyon.

Height of cliffdwelling rooms was low and ceilings

Sno Bowl on Western Slopes of Humphrey's Peak

The SnoBowl located near Flagstaff at the San Francisco Peaks is a really neat place for sking and snoboarding. It's located on the Humphrey's Peak and is a beautiful area. If you are over 70 you can use the Lifts for free!. I may have to come back! This area will be open for skiing until about mid-April.

Looks easy, right.

Verde Canyon Railroad Wildness Ride

From the old mining town of Clarkdale to the Perkinsville ghost ranch and back, we enjoyed a very relaxing train ride. It was a gorgeous day and the train was full.  Here are a few pix of our ride.

Red Jeep to the Canyon

We took a Red Jeep ride up into one of the Sedona area canyons. Judy and I sat in the rear and that turned into a rock 'n roll ride to be sure. It was fun and exciting riding where there just aren't any roads...none!
The views and the information given us by our driver Ron were remarkable. Yes, we had seatbelts on.
